General information about anti-aircraft searchlights

Anti-aircraft searchlights is a LED lighting technique that creates one or more light beams. It is clear that a special optical system or a set of lenses is used to form such beams. It is known that the work of powerful spotlights on lamps is based on the effect of total internal reflection, that is, a special reflector is used. It is interesting that when using LEDs as light sources, it will not be possible to use the effect of total internal reflection, since the LED is a directional light source with a half-power scattering angle of approximately 120 degrees. Therefore, the design of the LED anti-aircraft searchlight provides secondary optics – individual or group lenses for LEDs.

Low power consumption and compact size make the LED searchlight more suitable for use in mobile solutions. For example, it can be installed on military vehicle, connected to an autonomous power system and used to search for drones and detected aerial objects in the night sky.

Fields of application of the anti-aircraft searchlight

Despite the fact that an anti-aircraft searchlight is a specific lighting device, due to its functionality, it can have many areas of application. Traditionally, an LED overhead searchlight is used to mark individual objects or designated areas, effective even in cities with a lot of lighting.
Powerful anti-aircraft searchlights with a narrow beam of light can be used for marketing and advertising purposes, in light shows, etc. During martial law, due to the war provoked by Russia against Ukraine, LED searchlights are used to search to detect drones in the night sky. Military anti-aircraft searchlights can be used to search for people and objects not only in the sky but on land and sea, depending on the goals. The military uses anti-aircraft searchlights in air defense systems, airfields, to protect infrastructure facilities.

The main types and characteristics of anti-aircraft searchlights

All anti-aircraft searchlights manufactured in Ukraine can be classified according to their purpose, they differ in their main characteristics:

The military LED searchlight is designed to search for air targets and drones in the night sky. An important characteristic of a military anti-aircraft searchlight is the light beam, it must be narrow and extend for at least 1 km, with adequate light power to detect and discern an aerial object. Lamp anti-aircraft searchlights for military purposes are significantly inferior to LED searchlights, because their power is 4-5 times higher and this factor limits the use of lamp searchlights in field conditions, where LiFePO4 batteries and an inverter or generator are used for power.
